ChefSteps – Cook Your Way out of a Bad Day

Comfort Food Emergency

Recipes from the Wrong Side of the Bed

You’ve only been awake for a few minutes, but already you know—this just isn’t going to be your day. You’re angry just to be awake.  You look around at your perky family and grunt a sour good morning.

Time to thaw that cold heart.  Your regular routine just won’t do.

Step one: change up your morning beverage.  If you’re a coffee drinker, maybe skip the drip brew today and try a No-Press French Press or make yourself a DIY cappuccino or Liar’s Latte with this wandless milk frothing method. On the other hand, it is apple season, and there’s really nothing stopping you from enjoying a nice hot cider.  Is this all too much for you?  Just dig out that weird box of assorted herbal teas from the back of your cupboard and pick something out of the ordinary.

Whatever your drink, finish it with a dash of cardamom and a cinnamon stick, and take a moment to savor your steaming beverage in the cold morning air.

Damage Control

Next up, try an unusual breakfast on for size.  When’s the last time you had farina with butter and maple syrup?  Or started your day with creamy grits?  Got bread or English muffins around?  Toast ‘em up and top them with the ultimate poached egg

Mood Fixers

…and finally: Give yourself something to look forward to.

With any luck, the break from your routine has changed the tone of your morning, and the warm, comforting breakfast has melted away all the tension you didn’t even realize you were carrying in your muscles.  Well, this is no time to let your guard down.  Pull out that slow cooker, and give yourself something to look forward to all day long.

It’s hard to be cranky with the smell of braising beef, hardy stew, or all-day baked beans wafting from the kitchen.
